Nightlife Guide Fall 2010

For those of you who aren’t aware of the scene here in Salt Lake, it is quite diverse and it holds something for everyone.

Now, I promised I wouldn’t get involved with any “club drama” and I am sure this will piss some people off. This is just my honest assessment for people who are new in town or don’t know about the nightlife here in SLC.

Studio 27

Scene: Drag queens, alternative, mixed crowd, latino.
Nights To Check Out: Wednesday-Sunday
Pros: New remodel of the Trapp Door. It looks amazing. The DJs are amazing and the bar is classy. Potential to be a hot spot. The Trapp is next door.
Cons: New bar. Hasn’t found its identity yet. Small dance floor. No promoters. Not a “packed” club.
Conclusion: Awesome bar, but don’t expect a huge crowd.

Jam

Scene: 25-40 suburban, college, daddy, neighborhood bar.
Nights to check out: Wednesday Karaoke!
Pros: Cozy environment, nice bathrooms, good DJs, good drinks.
Cons: Questionable treatment of employees, but that is whatever. I am a bit mad at them but I will say objectively that it is a very small bar. Go way early on the weekends unless you want to spend your night waiting in line. It isn’t really a ‘dance’ club, small dance floor, too crowded in a small area.
Conclusion: Defiantly worth checking out on Wednesdays for Karaoke. We have a hard time supporting a business that treats members of our community poorly though.

Babylon

Scene: 21-30, jocks, party kids, nerds, Latino, circuit, boy next door.
Nights to check out: Saturdays!
Pros: Amazing world class DJs, classy environment awesome young attractive crowd, big budget, free cover before 11, great staff, biggest and best club venue in the state.
Cons: The previous ownership (lessees) quit gay night so it kind of killed the buzz. However, the new owners of the lease are 100% committed to the gay community and have nothing to do with the previous owners.
Conclusion: The place to be on Saturdays. Babylon offers something that no other club in the state can compete with. Compared to the two closest cities (Las Vegas and Denver) Babylon blows away any club in the Mountain West.

Fusion/Edge

Scene: Hipsters, alternative, mixed straight, Latino, drag, circuit.
Nights to check out: Thursday
Pros: New remodel, amazing people that work there, fantastic owners, great music and sexy promoters.
Cons: New club, decent drinks, “sound” atmosphere.
Conclusion: Thursdays are so much fun. It is a mixed crowd but everyone is cool with the gays. Saturdays are fun as well but with Babylon back, we are unsure about what the crowd is going to do.

Tavernacle

Scene: 21-35, college, mature, white, somewhat mixed.
Nights to check out: Tuesdays and Sundays
Pros: Classy venue, cheap drinks and amazing crowd and staff.
Cons: Not a “huge” club
Conclusion: The place to be on Sunday nights for Karaoke

Pure

Scene: Twinks,  college, latino, pretty good mix of social groups.
Nights to check out: Fridays!
Pros: The only place to be on Friday nights. Classy environment, posh accommodations, remarkable interior. Our favorite club and the only 18+ gay club in the state.
Cons: Small cover charge, some nights it is free.
Conclusion: We think pure is the best thing to happen to gay nightlife in Salt Lake.

Try Angles

Scene: Daddy, 25-50, bear, neighborhood bar.
Nights to check out: All week
Pros: Fun nights, cozy environment, neighborhood bar feel, games, TV.
Cons: Not really a “dance club”, small dance floor.
Conclusion: Great bar for people that don’t like to go “clubbing”

Obviously I am not an alcoholic, well….but anyway I don’t go and bar hop all week so a lot of the information provided is from what other people tell me. Feel free to comment and state any objections to our analysis.

Passion Starr, New Show Director At Studio 27?

Some are wondering what Studio was thinking, others are calling it a bad business decision, and a few are reinforcing the stage with steel support beams.

Either way Passion is telling everyone she is the new show director at Studio!

Is Passion the new face of Studio 27? Love the girl but what were they thinking?

HIV Awareness Week

Remember:

1) Wrap it before you tap it, especially if you are a bottom.

2) Don’t brush your teeth directly before giving head.

3) Get tested the second and fourth Wednesday of every month at the center.

4) Don’t mix sex with alcohol and drugs, alcohol is fine if you absolutely trust the other person.
